Sound Recording Advice publishes long-form, practical, gear-agnostic guides on home recording, microphones, acoustics, mixing, and podcasting. We try to write the guide you wish you'd had three years ago — the one that tells you which trade-offs matter, which don't, and why the gear forums frequently get it backwards.
We don't sell anything. We don't run affiliate links. We don't take sponsorships. When we recommend a specific product, we do it because it's the right answer at that price, not because someone is paying us. (Nobody is paying us. We are paying for the hosting.)
About our editorial bylines
We want to be transparent about this, because we'd rather you trust the work for what it is than feel misled later.
The bylines on this site — Marlon Hawkridge, Esme Valverde, Dele Kowalski, Rashida Thane — are editorial personas. Each represents a specific beat (vintage gear and analog workflows; vocal recording; acoustics; podcasting) and is written in a consistent voice, but they are not single individual humans you could meet at a conference.
Each persona's articles reflect pooled, verified expertise from working engineers, producers, and acousticians — their backgrounds, locations, and credentials are composite. The technical content is researched, fact-checked, and consistent with mainstream professional practice. The opinions and tone are real opinions held by working professionals; the names attached to them are not.
We chose this approach because it lets us publish across multiple specialties without pretending one person is an expert in everything, and because we'd rather you evaluate the content on its merits than on which name is attached.
How we research
Every guide on this site goes through a draft → fact-check → cross-reference cycle against established acoustic engineering, audio engineering, and broadcast practice. We cross-reference statements with primary sources where possible: AES papers, manufacturer specifications, and the recorded experience of working professionals in the relevant field.
If you find an error, please assume it was an honest one and let us know. We update articles when new information warrants it.
What we don't do
- We don't write "best of" gear listicles for SEO bait.
- We don't take affiliate revenue, sponsorships, or product placement.
- We don't publish AI-generated guides without thorough human review and rewriting.
- We don't take down published opinions because a manufacturer didn't like them.
